Planting a Food Forest on Earth Day

With Earth Day approaching, our school decided it was a great idea to get the student and staff body to contribute positively to the environment. There was numerous different volunteering options, and I chose to go to Chanticleer Acres, a local farm, to create a food forest for the wildlife. I helped by distributing soil to create a fertile ground for all of the plants, ensuring they would thrive in the food forest. Then, I planted blueberry bushes, taking into consideration their spacing and soil nutrients to promote healthy growth. Durning this, my friend and I both realized each others passion for gardening and wanted to do something together. These conversations led us to the idea of starting a garden club at Forman, as we both wanted to create more green spaces within our school community and involve other students in similar projects.

β€œThe Forman community was busy with service projects on Saturday for Earth Day. It was great to be out in nature, give back to the community, and pitch in to keep our campus and the surrounding areas clean and beautiful. The Truth, Respect, and Kindness expeditions (TReKs) included planting flowers around campus, picking up litter on campus and in Litchfield, clearing brush from trails, and planting seeds in the campus food garden.”
